The primary mission of AIRD is to “support the implementation of comprehensive rural development toward socio-economic development and poverty reduction in Afghanistan through training and education services, provision of research and policy inputs, and dissemination of results and findings to stakeholders”
A good model for what Afghanistan needs in order to make progress in poverty alleviation and rural development is the National Institute of Rural Development in Hyderabad, India www.nird.org.in.

The strategic objective of AIRD during rehabilitation and operational phase (2008-2010) is to rehabilitate and operationalize AIRD as a well equipped research and training centre for rural development in Afghanistan with adequate facilities and human capacity for deliberating research and training activities in collaboration with similar national and international institutions. During this phase AIRD will be visible and fully operational in Kabul and provinces.

AIRD works under the Local Governance Pillar of MRRD and based on the strategic objectives, the current Organizational Structure of the Institute consists of six main sections including Training and Education, Research and Policy, Impact Evaluation Unit, Information Dissemination & External Relation, Rural Technology Park and Admin/Finance section. The entire mentioned sections are properly operated and at the time, there are 83 staffs consisting of 50 contract staffs and 43 civil servants working in different positions within AIRD.
